ABAI Announces New Parental/Caregiver Leave Policy

6/22/2022

The ABAI Board of Directors approved a revised time away from training policy which can be found on page 27 of the ABAI Policies and Procedures (pdf), under the Parental/Caregiver Leave Policy for initial certification eligibility on June 17, 2022. Included in the updated policy is additional time away from training for candidates who take parental and/or caregiver leave during fellowship training. A new FAQ appendix has also been added to the policy that will be updated in real time.

The ABAI Executive Committee and Board have worked diligently to update this policy in response to the growing need to better accommodate reasonable leaves of absence from residency and fellowship training for personal or familial needs. The Board is deeply appreciative of the AAAAI FIT Committee for their advocacy and direct input into final language adopted in the policy revision. This new policy is fully aligned with emerging policy guidance from the American Board of Medical Specialties and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

This new policy and its co-development by stakeholders is emblematic of how ABAI is committed to engaging candidates and diplomates for the purpose of continuously improving programs and policies.

This policy is effective immediately.
